Property Taxes
Property taxes in South Carolina are local taxes. There are no state real or property taxes. Assessment ratios and the methods of computing value are uniform across the state, but each county implements its own assessment program.
Sales Tax
South Carolina levies a 6% sales tax on personal property, food, laundry and other similar items. There is an additional 2% tax on accommodations. Of the 6% sales tax, 1% is earmarked for the construction and operation of public schools. There is also a local option sales tax that varies from county to county.
Income Tax
South Carolina levies a tax on the net income of individuals, estates and trusts. Residents and non-residents who earn income from South Carolina sources are subject to the tax. The state income tax rates range from 2 to 7 percent on a graduated scale based on net income. Residents are taxed on 100% of their net taxable income, but are allowed a credit for taxes paid in other states. Part-year residents are taxed only on net taxable income derived from South Carolina sources. There are no municipal income taxes.
