Sports and Recreation

With the Charleston area's location on the beautiful South Carolina coastline, water sports lead the recreational options. Fishing is popular along the Atlantic Coast, in the Gulf Stream off shore and in Lakes Marion and Moultrie inland, and the area's reputation for trout, snapper, bass, whiting and much, much more attracts thousands of fishermen annually. Waterskiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and pleasure boating are also popular, and with some of the finest marinas along the Inland Waterway located in the greater Charleston area, service and charters are available for boats of all kinds.

Golf is another popular Charleston-area sport. The area is home to more than 20 courses, and several world-famous golf resorts including Kiawah Island and Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms. Charleston's semi-tropical climate allows for year-round golfing opportunities.

Other popular area recreation opportunities include hunting, camping and hiking.

When it comes to spectator sports, Charleston offers a wide variety of options. The area is home to a minor league baseball team (The Riverdogs) and professional soccer team (The Battery), each of which host their home games at brand new state-of-the-art facilities. The Stingrays, Charleston's professional ice hockey team, play at the Charleston Coliseum. The Citadel and the College of Charleston also lie within the city limits and offer top-notch teams in a variety of sports.
